Hollands main music website 3voor12 published it’s 2010 favorite mini-album “Musicbooth“. Our very own Moon & Sun was honored among the likes of Warpaint, Tallest man on Earth, Sufjan Stevens and Black Heart Procession. Well, how nice is that! If you want to catch Moon & Sun live, you should attend one of the dates on her upcoming winter tour since Monica Tormell will spend the first half of 2011 on Aruba and Curacao to work on a full length.

Today Dutch webzine 3voor12 posted an article regarding We vs. Death drummer and singer Gerben Houwer who, unfortunately, has decided to leave the band after 10 years of loyal duty. We vs. Death on the other hand is very much alive!

“We vs. Death is very much alive!” Bass player Marten Timan is resolute about the subject. Yes, drummer Gerben Houwer recently quit the band, but that is just the end of a chapter, the end of the first ten years of We vs. Death. When asked about the reason for his departure, Houwer says: “We vs. Death is a very ambitious band and I couldn’t combine that with my busy family life anymore.”

It’s fairly obvious the band has plenty of ambition. The past few years they toured England five times and went to Estonia, Poland and Russia, among others. Even Japan got to know the Utrecht-based post-rock band in 2007. “I am proud of what we’ve been through together”, says Houwer. “The uncompromising music, the musical process and of course the shows, of which the last few were the best if you ask me.” In July this year the band toured with label mates Kismet. Without knowing yet We vs. Death played their last shows with the drummer. “There won’t be a goodbye-concert,” Houwer confirms. “My last show as the drummer of We vs. Death was in Cologne.”

When the  irrevocable decision was made, Timan and the other band members put their heads together to discuss the future of the band. “We quickly agreed: we all want to continue.” Thus, We vs. Death is now looking for a new drummer. Someone who feels comfortable with the band and its ambitions, and who has his own sound. Timan stresses: “We are not looking for a copycat of Gerben.”

The band used the past few weeks to write new material and to experiment. “We are trying new things and take the time to reinvent ourselves.” What the future will bring, Timan doesn’t know yet. “At this time we are in writing mode. Hopefully we’ll be back soon with a new line-up. And a new release, of course.”

drum-roll please! Uhm, well, actually a whole bunch of artists are nominated, but the good news is The Black Atlantic is one of them. ‘One of what?’, you might be thinking. One of the lucky 12 artists to be nominated for the 3voor12 Award ‘Best Dutch Album 2010′!

That’s right, their debut album ‘Reverence for Fallen Trees’ keeps doing great things and stands a chance to be picked out as a winner during the ceremony in Desmet, Amsterdam on September 9th. There’s gonna be some voting by the public as well, so we’ll be asking for your help soon enough. The sweet people at 3voor12 made a nice video of The Black Atlantic in which Geert and Stef talk a little about the band, their past and future plans. Label Beep! Beep! Back-up the Truck focust zich op gratis muziek

Beep! Beep! Back-up the Truck is voor de buitenwereld een nieuw normaal platenlabel, maar ze doen meer dan alleen platen verkopen. Ze zetten de muziek gratis online en zien zichzelf als een hechte community. “Beep! Beep! Voor intimi,” vat labelbaas Nicolai Adolfs Beep! Beep! samen. “Wij vinden het fijn als mensen onze platen kopen. Maar voor hetzelfde gemak downloaden ze het via torrent websites. Als ze het downloaden, kunnen ze dat beter bij ons doen. Dan kunnen ze gelijk naar onze andere bands luisteren.” Adolfs merkt dat in de doelgroep waar hij zich op richt, de mensen eerst een cd downloaden en als ze het goed vinden, pas de plaat gaan kopen. Aangezien de bands op het label nog niet zo bekend zijn, is de gratis muziek reclame voor ze.

Het label heeft geen winstoogmerk en verdient daardoor niet zoveel geld aan de cd-verkoop en de merchandising. Dat geld gaat direct naar de bands. “We krijgen een klein percentage om de vaste lasten af te lossen. Wij zijn officieel een stichting.” Dit is extra aantrekkelijk voor een band om met Beep! Beep! in zee te gaan en het bijvoorbeeld als opstapje te gebruiken. Hier komt nog eens bij kijken dat alle bands zich voor elkaar inzetten, zodat er geen boekingskantoor bij betrokken raakt. “We zijn een collectief. Een commune. We werken met z’n allen samen,” zegt Adolfs. “Als een band tekent bij ons, betekent dit dat ze zich intensief moeten inzetten voor het label. Een band helpt bijvoorbeeld met de promotie of het organiseren van een optreden voor een andere band.”

Ambities zijn er genoeg met het label, maar daar wil Adolfs niet te veel op ingaan, behalve dat hij het woord buitenland even in zijn mond neemt. “We zijn een independent label en we zijn van plan om eerst onze naam te verspreiden in Nederland. Misschien daarna het buitenland. Met de gratis downloads gaan we aandacht krijgen, zodat we de komende jaren kunnen groeien.” Adolfs ziet geen groot nadeel als een grotere band tekent bij het label, die zich dan vervolgens niet wil inzetten voor de andere artiesten. “Dankzij de naamsbekendheid van een grotere band, kan de rest daar ook van profiteren.” Maar Adolfs ziet het niet zo snel gebeuren dat een band zich niet inzet voor het label. “Voordat we een kwaliteitsband tekenen praten we met ze wat we voor elkaar kunnen betekenen.”

Vanaf 31 mei gaat de vernieuwde website van Beep! Beep! Back-up the Truck online. Op de luisterpaal kun je een verzamel cd van het label beluisteren.

“Het bootfestival dat de Utrechtse band Stairs To Nowhere op een binnenvaartschip aan de Muntkade te Utrecht had gepland, is op last van de verzekering afgelast. Op het festival, dat werd aangekondigd als besloten feest, zouden behalve Stairs To Nowhere ook The Walt en The Exploding Sheltand Ponies spelen.”
